Gross Inflows
New money committed to a manager's funds in the period, BEFORE subtracting money that left. It measures fundraising demand -- the sales result -- and is the cleanest read on whether investors want the product. The trap is that gross inflows alone say nothing about whether AUM grew: a manager can raise a record amount and still shrink if redemptions and realizations were larger. Always pair it with outflows to get the net figure, and note that in private markets committed capital may not earn fees until it is actually deployed.
