Emergency Room Visits

Visits to the emergency department, whether or not the patient was then admitted. It matters beyond its own revenue because the ER is the main front door of an American hospital -- a large share of profitable inpatient admissions arrives through it -- so ER volume is a leading indicator for admissions a quarter or two out. Watch the ADMISSION RATE from the ER alongside the visit count: rising visits with a falling admission rate means more low-acuity traffic, which is far less profitable and can even be loss-making.
