Revenue Per Admission
The average revenue a hospital generated per patient admission -- total patient revenue divided by the number of admissions. It captures the "intensity" and pricing of the care delivered: it rises with a sicker case mix (more complex, higher-acuity patients), with a shift toward better-reimbursing services, and with rate increases, and it falls when volume shifts to lower-acuity or outpatient settings. Read alongside admissions (the volume metric), revenue per admission tells you whether a hospital's revenue growth is coming from treating more patients or from treating them more intensively -- a key distinction for judging the durability of the growth.
