Retail Traffic

The change in the number of customer transactions (store visits) year-over-year, shown as a percentage -- one of the two halves that make up same-store sales, the other being average ticket. Traffic is the truer read on a retailer's underlying demand and market-share position, because it counts how many people are actually shopping, independent of price. A retailer growing comps on traffic is winning customers; one growing comps only on ticket (higher prices or bigger baskets) while traffic falls may be masking a shrinking customer base with inflation -- a warning sign, especially for value retailers whose whole proposition is getting more people through the door.
