AI Hallucination
A confident, fluent answer from an AI language model that no source supports: an invented figure, a misattributed quote, or a citation to a document that does not say what is claimed. It happens because these models write by predicting plausible text, and even an assistant connected to a data source can fill a gap with a guess instead of reporting the gap. The defense is to ask for the filing and date behind any figure, and to treat an assistant that says it cannot answer, and explains why, as more careful rather than less useful.
